GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE MONITORING

Roger Williams Park

From 2015-2020, the City of Providence has put significant resources into installing stormwater best management practices (BMPs) in Roger Williams Park in order to reduce pollutant loading and improve water quality.

Goals of the collaborative monitoring project with UNH Stormwater Center and the Stormwater Innovation Center in 2020-2021:
  1. Provide high-resolution data on the quality of water entering and leaving the pond system to guide future management

  2. Provide practical visual assessment and performance of sites during storm events

  3. Evaluate the performance of some of the established BMPs and compare them to design specifications

Providence Metro Area

The Stormwater Innovation Center received grant funding from the Narragansett Bay Estuary Program in 2022, to apply low-cost assessment and monitoring of green infrastructure (GI) throughout the Providence metro area. This project was a collaborative effort between the Audubon Society of Rhode Island, The Nature Conservancy of Rhode Island, and the University of New Hampshire Stormwater Center. Previous research had found that green infrastructure projects do not always perform as designed, reducing their ability to improve water quality. Low-cost assessments using pressure sensors, loggers, and remote field cameras provide essential information on project performance and give managers and designers the data and information necessary to repair underperforming projects or adjust maintenance practices.
